The Untamed Rose Perfume

You may be wondering why, how a glass artist got into perfumes. Well I happen to personally really enjoy perfumes, particularly unusual indie ones(cant be smelling like everyone else of course) One day while searching for a perfume for myself I wanted something…rose but not rose. I wanted warm, sexy but not musk and over done. While looking, and working on my own shop in another window it came to me that “Untamed Rose”…could be a perfume.   While I didnt know what Untamed Rose would smell like exactly, it sure sounded just what I was looking for this mythical perfume in my head.   So I dove into the world of perfume creation and very quickly learned..I needed help. Through a contact that I had known for years, I was introduced to a professional perfumer. With many years of experience behind her, plus several award winning blends under her belt and my vision or idea of an perfume.  We spent months trying different notes and blends…to finally come to the perfect Untamed Rose perfume. It really is everything I dreamed it would be.

It has the rose but isnt a Rose grandma’s rose water.  It’s warming comforting without being bakery.  Sexy without being over done, and a screaming Hey I’m trying to be sexy desperate smell.  This is a I AM sexy, I am strong, and a little Untamed. You game?

Specially made for that woman, with the fire of curiosity in her eyes, the wild wind in her hair, and the untamed heart thats driven to soar. She’s sexy but doesnt need to over do it, she just is. She’s sweet to a fault, but vicious protector of those who need it. She loves with all her heart, but doesnt submit. Only a strong lover willing to run at her side and love her as she is will do. She knows she is here for greatness..that she only need to keep pushing. Just over that next hill, past this next challenge, soon… the whole world will be in the palm of her hand. There is an untamed woman in each girl….question really is does she embrace that side of herself.

So whats in it?   The notes include Rose, blackerry, vanilla, tonka beans, amber, a wild woods and course a little untamed fire!

Looking to get into lampworking?

Glasswork is an exciting and fun art form, its also unfortunately a pretty expensive art. However with some planning and research it is do able from home on a budget.

First off need to decide what your wanting to create. Be it soft glass beads, boro pendents, sculptural work, lamp work glass blowing(different from the more traditional glass blowing which is a whole other world)

There are strengths and weakness to all forms, and there really isnt a best just depends upon what you want to do with it. For example in general there are more colors available and it is cheaper to get into soft glass(soda lime glass COE 104 or 96) as it doesnt require as high of temperatures, plus the colored glass is less expensive. But it’s almost impossible to do off mandrel work with, and sculptures with.(some do but its not the recommended one to use) However one can do highly detailed designs on the side of beads that is difficult to do in boro.

Borosilicate, Pyrex glass is fairly new…least considering how long humans have been playing with glass. It was made by adding boron, to the traditional glass mix. Its much more durable, less shocky, there are less colors available. Not that its less colorful just its different. However it’s more expensive to get started, really need a different torch and the colored glass is more expensive.(clear is actually much cheaper.)

What you will need….

Torch 35.00 to 8k (200 though is pretty realistic)

Fuel 10.00 to 45.00 most lampworkers use either the really small propane tanks to normal bbq tank like you have for your grill.

Oxygen 35 to 400.00 This one bite me when I first started. You will use(least in boro glass) a LOT more oxygen then you think you will. I was going through 6-7 K oxygen tanks per one bbq tank or propane. At 35.00 a pop refills, it was a lot cheaper for me one I purchased an oxycon but those cost 300 to 500.

Kiln, this can be where it gets expensive. You dont really Have to have one, until you plan on selling then it really is mandatory. Plus a lot of the colors(least in boro) need that time in the kiln to fully develop. But before your selling while just playing around one can use a thermal blanket, which will help the glass cool slower and prevent cracks.  Expect to spend about 600 on a small good glass kiln.

Eye protection. 80.00 to 200.00 Working with the flame is incredibly bright. Its absolutely mandatory to have the special glasses. I normally use a number 3 shade glasses for normal work but have level 5 clip on’s for the BIG stuff. To give you an idea how strong these are I put the 5s on the 3′s and was able to watch the last solar eclipse(there is a perk! :D )

Tools 60.00 to millions! There are actually a lot more tools specially made for lampworkers then one would have thought when first looking into this. Whats kind of neat is 90% of them are made by other glassworkers lol. Course you dont need them all. Personal I only use a handful really. Hot grabbers(claw looking things), needle nose pliers, mashers, regular old paper scissors(though now worthless for paper), and peters tweezers.

Ventilation need to think about where your setting up your shop and air flow. There are fumes and metals we use and that are in the glass that can be very dangerous. Need good airflow and/or a true ventilation system to keep you safe.

This isnt a complete list but just the basics, also if your serious about this need to do a lot more research then my blog post here :)

A good place to start that..

The 50 Shades of Amber Purple

Amber Purple!!!

This is one of my All time favorite glasses.  Made By North Star Glass works in Tigard, Oregon.   It is incredibly variable, the range of colors possible with this glass is insanely wonderful(and infuriating at times lol)

This is what Amber purple Rod look like, it's a honey color before heat is applied

This is what it looks like when it first comes to me.  Pending the type of flame I use, how hot the kiln is.  How the weather is and if I hold my breath while creating.  Will determine what the final colors look like.   Amber purple glass while hot.  Believe it or not different colors of glass Glow different colors.  I need a special camera filter to really show you though. So..Lets see how it all turns out. Examples of this color.
